Total Hip Replacement (THR) Surgery

Total hip replacement surgery involves replacing the worn out (arthritic) parts of the natural hip joint with a new ball and socket. It is one of the most consistently reliable operations performed with patient satisfaction levels well in excess of 90%. There is no doubt that through the elimination/reduction of arthritic pain your life will be transformed for the better with improved sleep and mobility and a return to your former independence. Often patients report a complete return to their former levels of activity and quality of life, sleeping without pain.

Whilst there are many different types of hip replacement they all essentially aim to achieve the same outcome. When I see you for a consultation regarding your hip and assuming that we agree that hip replacement surgery is appropriate for you, I will discuss with you which design of hip replacement will serve you best. Modern hip replacements have extremely good wear properties and should provide many years of good functional use.

I’m not insured – How much will it cost?

After seeing Mr Pearson in clinic those patients who want surgery but who aren’t insured will receive a quote from the self-pay team at The Priory or at Droitwich Spa Hospital you will be introduced to the Patient Liaison Officers who can do the quote for you there and then and guide you through the process.

How long is your waiting list for surgery?

With operating lists at 2 hospitals and Mr Pearson working full time in the private sector many patients, who are fit and well enough for surgery, can have their operation within a few weeks. But when you are having your operation done privately, if you have family events and holidays already in the diary we can plan your surgery months in advance to work around these.

What happens at my first appointment?

All new patients will meet Mr Pearson for a 30 minute consultation. He will examine your hip, look at your x-ray, talk to you about your condition and guide you through all treatment options. Whether you go ahead, if surgery is offered, is always your decision.

What can I expect from the operation?

Pain relief is the major benefit of hip replacement surgery. You will usually notice this almost immediately after the operation, although naturally you will have some short lived surgical discomfort. There are some practical limitations to having hip replacement surgery which I will happily discuss with you at your consultation.

What happens before my operation?

A week or two before your admission to hospital you will be seen in a pre-assessment clinic. At this clinic you will be seen by doctors and nurses who will assess your general health and medical history in preparation for your operation. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have about coming into hospital. If you are self-paying, the pre-op assessment is included in your package.

What happens after my operation?

Once you leave the operating theatre you will initially be taken to the recovery room and will remain there until you are fully awake and the doctors and nurses are happy for you to return to your room. You will be given good pain relief and your progress will be closely monitored by your named nurse. The anaesthetist and I will visit you to ensure all is well and I will see you regularly throughout your hospital stay.

Physiotherapy

The physiotherapist will help you mobilise and get your hip moving freely advising you on the exercises you will need to follow to strengthen your muscles and help you get the most from your new hip. They will also show you how to avoid any mechanical complications with your hip replacement. Physio sessions continue a couple of weeks after your surgery and if you are self-paying for your operation, the price of these is included in your package.

When can I leave hospital?

Most patients will stay in hospital for 2 to 3 nights after hip replacement surgery, however everyone’s different and your discharge home will be tailored to your needs. The hospital team ensures that you are confident with using your sticks, getting in and out of bed, using toilet facilities and with stairs.

What happens when I get home?

The first thing that you will notice is that the pain and stiffness that you have had before surgery will have gone. You may have some swelling and bruising of the operated leg which is quite normal and will quickly subside. Don’t be surprised if you feel rather tired for the first week when you get home again this is quite normal and will quickly improve. You will find that you can walk greater distances and with more comfort with each day. We will have asked you to arrange for your skin clips to be removed at your doctor’s surgery approximately two weeks after the operation. You should not drive a car until you have seen Mr Pearson for your follow-up appointment, which is normally 5 or 6 weeks after your hip replacement surgery.
